Empathy: understanding another person’s perspective, is not one of my talents. I have to work at being empathetic – it takes effort.

What helps me understand another person’s perspective, especially when I know it’s much different from mine is comparing the perspectives of the antelope and the lion.

Here’s how the story goes – the lion hasn’t eaten for days and is very hungry. The lion sees the antelope and says – ‘thank God for this chance to eat’. The antelope sees the lion running towards it and says ‘God, how could you let this happen?’

Practice being empathetic by thinking about how someone with the opposite perspective might feel and what they might say.

You don’t have to agree with it, only demonstrate empathy.

Can you empathize with my perspective?
