Summary of BIL 2011
The new BIL Forum seeks to create dialogue between practitioners of BIM, IPD and LEAN construction and coordinate efforts. A small but select group at BIL 2011 worked on ideas to move BIL toward this end. As a result, BIL will help avert duplication of efforts of the various practitioners around the state and assist these practitioners in accomplishing their objectives. Actions to assist include educating “working” owners, creating a clearinghouse for mutual understanding of BIL use/needs e.g. how each discipline uses a BIM execution plan, sharing training materials, listing subject matter experts, etc.. and becoming the BIL gathering place in Texas. This gathering place will be comprised of the BIL Forum, use of a web page/blog and email distribution list.
BIL’s short-term objectives:
- Build the web page and email list for communication purposes
- “Cover” all BIL - related places in the state with at least one of BIL’s team members, for example:
- Bernita Beikmann (HKS) – IPDAssured Program, LCI Dallas
- Jeff Johnston (Tellepsen) – LCI Houston, AGC BIM SIG Houston
- Micheal Shook (Turner) BIM Group in Austin/San Antonio
BIL’s vision:
Progress from Present State – random organization dialogue, limited resources, limited to contractor, need more subs, owners, designers, best practices, no direction on how to use BIL as a whole, experimentation, evolving, no leadership or promotion
To Future State – one stop shop for BIL (support all three topics - this is how the BIL Forum improves the participant’s condition), resources for info, training, liaison to universities/educators (invite them to BIL), attracting owners, subs, designers
BIL will Reach its Future State by Filling This Perceived Gap – lack of availability of BIL resources, training, materials, lists of related organizations like LCI and (coordination with them), marketing plan, email addresses, web page, blog w/ “consumer reports” like content, BIL’s Monday Morning Memo with bullet points of "BIL business intelligence" most don’t have time to gather themselves & BIL related calendar
