If you think of collaboration in an eternal sense, it is light (both literally and figuratively). If you think of it in a temporal sense, it can be extraordinarily heavy.
What is eternal? The impact you make on others and in turn the project or organization that lives on through them after you are gone. Everyone is given time, talent and resources and is accountable for what they do with them. It’s light because it’s not expected and it’s long-term – it sets-off a chain reaction of acts of kindness.
What is temporal? It’s cooperation, not collaboration. It’s using your time, talent and resources to make an impact on yourself, only taking into account others and in turn the project or organization as long as there is impact for you. It’s heavy because it’s never enough. It’s a series of one-offs that you have to continually generate.
What have you done with your time, talent and resources that is collaborative in an eternal sense? Have you created all the light you can?
